JEWEL OF THE GRENADINES
A single speck in a sweep of 32 coral-rimmed islands that comprise St Vincent and the Grenadines, Mustique is 1,400 acres of tropical flora sheltering tortoises, iguanas and herons, flanked by nine palm-shaded beaches of powder-white sand. Since Princess Margaret became enamoured with the island in the 1970s, Mustique has blossomed as a discrete sanctuary for noted figures, with many choosing to call one of the island’s characterful villas home on a permanent basis.
SEEKING VISUAL INSPIRATIONS
The experience begins with Magnum Photographer Jonas honing in on the visual inspiration that each guest has found most impactful in their own photography before taking the lead on a thrilling series of photography workshops in the field. Gain rare access into some of the island’s most spectacular historic villas to explore ‘Place, Textures and Light’, and capture the interplay of the natural and the manmade.
A field trip by private plane to the neighbouring St Vincent presents rare opportunities to document the relationship between history and culture, whilst a boat trip around Mustique island showcases the spectacular natural setting of this corner of the Caribbean.
MASTERING INDUSTRY-GRADE SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES
Creative workshops will enhance guests’ practical know-how through the application of creative angles and unexpected vantage points, with an emphasis on developing a closer understanding of camera techniques and technologies and more robust selection and digital photo-editing practices. There will of course be time dedicated each day to the enjoyment of Mustique’s many leisure pursuits, whether that’s taking an evening dip in the company of sea turtles or enjoying freshly grilled lobster and cocktails on the beach.
The Cotton House is a true icon of the West Indies. Mustique’s only hotel is nestled within acres of sun-blushed green that falls away to the cerulean waters of Endeavour Bay. Formerly an old cotton warehouse, and retaining much of its heritage charm, the hotel opened in the 1960s as a casual haunt for the island’s new arrivals. To this day it remains the hub of the Mustique’s fabled social life, along with Basil’s Bar nearby, built on a pontoon above the waves of Britannia Bay.
Norway native Jonas Bendiksen is a critically-acclaimed Magnum photographer who has made a name for himself shooting the stories of isolated communities around the world.
For this journey Jonas will take the lead in getting to the heart of Mustique and its neighbouring islands, and capturing the unique interplay of its land, water, wildlife and peoples.
