ART, HUMANITY AND THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT IN VENICE
In the illuminating company of acclaimed architect Francesco da Mosto and Early Modern art specialist Dr Giulia Martina Weston, enjoy an insightful and unrivalled appreciation of one of the world’s greatest cultural events, the Venice Biennale, curated by Cecilia Alemani for its 59th edition.
Explore this year’s exhibition themes of transformation, technology and humanity’s relationship with the environment as they are expressed across Venice. How do artists choose to represent the human form over time? Is technology transforming how we see ourselves?
Discover the artistic and cultural history of the city through rare behind-the-scenes access and learn about impressive technical and ecological projects helping to safeguard the future of Venice.

BEGINNING A CULTURAL ENQUIRY
Home for the week is a lagoon-view suite at one of Venice’s most prestigious landmark hotels. Renowned architect, author and Venice native Francesco da Mosto opens the door to his family home, Palazzo Baglioni, and is joined by distinguished art historian Dr Giulia Martina Weston for a welcome dinner at one of Francesco’s favourite restaurants. The following day, Giulia leads a visit to the Biennale Giardini, site of the national pavilions, and an especially memorable evening is arranged at La Fenice opera house.

REDISCOVERING THE FEMININE IN VENETIAN ART
Giulia’s expert knowledge enhances a viewing of masterpieces by Titian and Bellini in the Basilica dei Frari and Early Modern paintings by Venetian women artists at the Gallerie dell’Accademia. How are these once overlooked female painters perceived today?
Following this, spend time in the Accademia’s conservation laboratories for a behind-the-scenes insight into the art restoration process. Enjoy an after hours visit to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection’s ‘Surrealism and Magic’ exhibition, with the museum's Associate Curator, concluding with an aperitivo on the roof terrace. What do these works say about the human desire for transformation and change?

THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE OF TECHNOLOGY
Francesco offers fresh context on the Biennale exhibitions which consider the relationships between humans and technology, by unveiling the ground-breaking digital recording project creating a 3D model of the whole island of San Giorgio Maggiore.
As Venice’s Ambassador of Glass, he is uniquely placed to illuminate the art of glassmaking at Le Stanze del Vetro, while the D Building in Giudecca reveals an innovative, forward-looking approach to urban landscaping. Later, Francesco leads an intimate and unhurried visit to the city’s most cherished symbol, St Mark’s Basilica.

VENICE’S RELATIONSHIP WITH LAND AND SEA
Join Francesco on an expedition into the lagoon, stopping at several of Venice’s outlying islands. On San Michele, observe traditional winemaking methods in the island’s singular vineyard. What are the challenges of cultivating wines in this environment? Discover the remarkable history of Venice’s former quarantine island, Lazzaretto Nuovo, and learn about the city’s expansive flood barrier at Bocca di Porto di Lido. How is technology helping the Floating City to manage its precarious relationship with the sea? As the sun sets, sit down to an exceptional dinner featuring the finest Venetian cuisine on Torcello.
