Thu 11th The Luminaire presents SAM BAKER + Special guest Michael Weston King
Doors 7.30 Last year, Bob Harris told listeners to his big-audience Radio 2 show that Sam Baker’s Pretty World was “magnificent – one of the GREAT albums of the year”. Within weeks, the CD had jumped straight to the No 1 slot on the Euro Americana Chart. Following his sensational first visit to Europe, a run of sell-out shows, and an end of the year that found him at the top of many Best of 2007 lists, Sam headlined the big Blue Highways Festival in The Netherlands, and later this year he brings his full band back to the UK as the main act for Maverick magazine’s all-day Americana event in Suffolk. That will be followed by a string of solo shows in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Australia is the latest territory to get excited about Sam and his music. Writing in the country’s highly regarded roots music mag, Rhythms leading Americana critic, Martin Jones, said: “Sam Baker has delivered two of the most vital singer-songwriter records of the decade. Do not pass him by.” This will be Sam’s second appearance at The Luminaire. We are proud to say that we were on the case when he embarked on his first ever UK tour last year. Those who came along were treated to an outstanding performance and we are happy to welcome him back. Michael Weston King is wideley acknowledged as one of Britian's finest singer songwriters, Admired by the likes of Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman, Ron Sexsmith, Jackie Leven, and even the legendary Townes van Zandt (who recorded one of Michael's songs), he draws his influence from a wide range of styles, from Pop to Folk, from Country music to Soul. He is the former leader of U.K. Alt Country pioneers The Good Sons, with whom he made 4 critically acclaimed albums in a seven year career, which was recently celebrated by the double album, Cosmic Fireworks-The Best of The Good Sons (1994-2001).
"The band who must rate as England's very own Uncle Tupelo. A truly thrilling collection." - MOJO magazine For the past seven years he has been a solo troubadour, touring all over the world, performing with the likes of Nick Cave, John Cale, Roger McGuinn, Steve Earle, Nils Lofgren, Guy Clark, Chris Hillman, Ron Sexsmith, and many more, and releasing five beautiful, articulate albums along the way.
"As fine a singer songwriter as Gram Parsons" - CHRIS HILLMAN |
