EXPLORING THE ANTHROPOLOGY OF DEATH

An archaeologist specialising in the funerary world and the excavation of human remains, Emma Bonthorne has worked at dig sites across the globe, from Peru to East Timor. At present she is directing excavations in Spain, investigating a site linked with the legendary Battle of Roncesvalles, fought between French and Anglo-Portuguese forces during the Peninsular War (1807-1814).

For over a decade, Emma has taught field excavation and laboratory courses in anthropology. She is currently undertaking doctoral research at the University of Oxford.

A tour leader of archaeological locations in multiple countries, Emma specialises in off-the-beaten track exploration of cultural and historic monuments, ruins and UNESCO-listed sites.

Emma is also passionate about photography, hiking, adventure travel, cultural heritage and gastronomy.
